A cover letter should be well written so as to motivate the reader to come up to next step of your purpose. You need to check every angle not only the grammar but also the idea you are trying to convey to the reader.

It should be of convincing nature so taht it makes the reader to look at your resume.

The cover letter will be seen first. So it must be carefully written and should be well targeted to the employer.

It should throw light to the elements of your background like education, past experience,leadership.

It should Reflect your personality, motivation level, enthusiasm, and of course your communication skills.

Most often, the cover letter term is use only for application letter. This should not be because there are other thing that in the business world that needs a cover letter.

A business proposal is not only one of the examples that needs cover letter. This cover letter is of course almost the same with the application letter. While in the application letter you are trying to convince the HR that you are qualified for the job, in the business proposal cover letter, it is a sales letter which sales the business to the other business institution.
